Holocaust Memorial Torah

Shalom School is proud to have a very special Torah scroll on campus. What makes it special? Not only because was it written in 1880 or does it come from Prestice in what is now the Czech Republic, it is special because it survived the Nazi occupation and World War II.

Our Sefer Torah is MST Number 222. It came from Přeštice, in what is now the Czech Republic. It was written in 1880 and is one of 14 scrolls from Přeštice on loan to congregations and schools around the world.

How did it find its way to our school? Marvin and Linda Kamras arranged for the loan of the Torah from the Memorial Scrolls Trust to Shalom School. They also gifted the beautiful embroidered cover – or mantel – in honor of their grandchildren and in memory of the children of Přeštice.

Currently, our Memorial Scroll is used during our annual Simchat Torah celebration as well as during our elementary school tefillah services during the school year and for student learning. More information about the Memorial Scrolls Trust is available on their website at https://www.memorialscrollstrust.org/.
