OUR Honorees:

Penny Bard, Carry Cohn & Liz Igra

Penny Bard: Almost forty years ago, members of our community sat around the Bard dining room table and all agreed on the importance of a Jewish Day School. Believing that a Jewish education was exceedingly important and would greatly contribute to keeping their children Jewish, her dream would become a reality. Trusting in this vision, through hard work and persistence, Penny would become one of the first parents of Shalom School.

Carry Cohn: When Shalom School was founded in 1978, Carry became the first Hebrew and Judaic studies teacher. Teaching the Alef-Bet, sharing Torah stories, and inspiring Jewish values and traditions, Carry instilled a love of Jewish learning. Many in this community are proud members of the ‘Carry Cohn Student Club,’ and hundreds of others living in the United States and beyond have carried on Carry’s legacy of passion and love for our Tradition.

Liz Igra: Liz partnered with her dear friend, Penny Bard and other founding families to build the only Community Jewish Day School in the Sacramento area. As Shalom School grew, Liz remained involved in every area of the developing campus, from the administration, curriculum, and teaching to building a strong community. Liz is also a proud parent and grandparent of Shalom School students and continues to educate our community as Founder and President of the Central Valley Holocaust Educators Network (CHEN).

Shalom School honors Penny, Carry, and Liz for their leadership, vision, and determination, in planting the seeds that have grown into the Shalom School of today.
